International
Society of
Typographic
Designers
I am a member of the International Society of Typographic Designers(ISTD), and have been an invited assessor on the society's student assessment scheme for more than 15 years.
The society was founded in 1928 (originally as the British Typographers Guild) with the express purpose of upholding and promoting the craft skills of the creative typographer.
The ISTD runs the International Typographic Awards which are held as an appraisal of current standards in typographic design and are judged by some of today's leading graphic, interactive and typographic design specialists.
The annual Student Assessment Scheme, which started in 1975, allows students to gain entry to the ISTD. This is achieved through assessment of project submissions that respond to the ISTD briefs which are launched in October each year. Only students registered on a recognised full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course can submit work. Assessment is carried out by teams of practicing designers and academics involved in the teaching of typography.
Student Assessments are held in the USA, UK, Ireland, Middle East, South Africa and Australasia.
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design has an outstanding reputation at ISTD. The class of 2017 were top of the ISTD international league tables.
