The organisation of healthcare involves a complex mixture of professional and personal behaviours coupled with different and distinctive cultures. Some aspects of this are visible to the public, while others remain hidden within the particular practices and methodologies of the many different groups involved in the care of hospital patients. Elements of these cultures often relate to aspects of human factors and are increasingly viewed as important features of patient safety and the prevention of healthcare-related adverse events.
The aim of this project is to develop an educational board game which will raise awareness amongst healthcare professionals of the impact of Human Factors upon patient outcomes. The board game (called ‘Risk & Resilience’) – which was originally developed for nursing staff within NHS Tayside – provides an opportunity for an inter-professional approach to human factors, allowing players to apply the principles of leadership, communication, team work, prioritisation, situational awareness and decision-making within a clinical context.
